I’d never had a particularly pleasant experience with education, I had struggled with multiple issues throughout primary and high school, I never enjoyed the environment, and the social situations often put me on edge, I had struggled with anxiety issues and concerns based around my later life and career.
I was never particularly interested in the subjects at school, the only lessons I didn’t mind being in were IT and Computer Science, however in my pivotal year In high school my mental health took a turn and I ended up going to college a year early instead of completing my GCSE’s.
At college I passed the IT level 2 course on my first year, which generally put me off doing IT as a career, I found the classes and work boring and thought I was wasting my time, I had no passion or interest for the work I was doing.
I took a year to try acting on the performing arts course, and passed the level 3 in a year, but realistically had achieved nothing in terms of a career, which is when I enrolled in another college who set me up with a placement at Matmi.
The research I had done into Matmi beforehand had actually gotten me excited to go in and learn, it seemed like the things they were doing were actually fun and creative, things that I could become passionate about and really give it my all.
Matmi had worked with some big names in the industry, not just the development industry, but the music industry and parks like Alton towers too, when I heard that Matmi had worked with Gorillaz and Iron Maiden, my anticipation was through the roof.
My experience at Matmi so far has been nothing but positive, I’ve been welcomed in with open arms by the staff since day one, the amount of opportunities and options I’ve been presented with is really something.
My day to day at Matmi mainly consists of testing mobile apps, among other things such as helping with jobs around the office, but every day I come in with the intention to learn something new and creative, which is what I think Matmi is all about, the creativity and innovation.
Working at Matmi has presented me with opportunities I would of never thought I’d have, I’ve been included in workshops for changing the world, have had the amazing experience of testing VR equipment (which I’ve never done before) and have even offered to set me up with a machine to learn and play around with development.
I’ve never been someone who’s excited to come into work or school, but being at Matmi is different, being able to come in and just know you’ll be doing something interesting and relevant is brilliant and has really re-ignited my passion for working with computers.
Here at Matmi I truly feel like I can reach my potential and be given the push to go further in my education, I’m learning more and more by the day and will continue to do so for as long as I am able.
