Will the intern has been with us for the past 3 months but sadly it’s time for him to leave us to continue his studies at University. It’s been great having Will here, his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn new things has made him a fantastic asset to the company. He quickly adapted to Matmi life and has gelled really well with the team. He will be missed, but we doubt we’ve seen the last of him! From all at Matmi we would like to thank Will for all his hard work and wish him the best of luck for the year ahead.
We asked him to share his thoughts on his time at Matmi, here’s what he had to say…
For the past three months, between my third and final master’s year at university, I’ve been working as an intern alongside Jeff and the Matmi team, from attending meetings, carrying out research, writing proposals, and learning new coding languages, I’ve gained a plethora of valuable skills and experience.
The best part of working with a small team is being agile in how you work, I found myself spread across many different tasks, every day I’d be doing something new, allowing me to gain experience in all stages of development. Interacting with every member of the team and seeing how they handle day to day tasks has been invaluable, showing how a product goes from its early stages of concept design to its final release.
We would often have meetings around ongoing projects, where everyone’s ideas and suggestions were equally valued, as everyone throws in their pitch for new features or totally crazy tangents into different concepts proving there is no such thing as a silly question or a bad idea in product creation and development.
While here I’ve spent time looking into early stage projects, researching the market around a concept and seeing which ideas would be viable before jumping into the design phase. Along with many other things, this has given me a good insight into current VR and AR products available now, and in the near future, which is a big interest of mine. With continued advances hopefully moving us towards a future where MR is a commodity in industry, commercial, and entertainment sectors.
As some of you may know from my last blog, most of my time here at Matmi has been spent working on the Table Foosball, I won’t go into too much detail as it was covered in the previous blog, but this pet project has most definitely been my highlight of working here at Matmi. The experience I gained from designing and programming in all new languages (with the extensive interaction and assistance of the Matmi team) has been a great addition to my skill set.
Furthering the Foosball table, I have been looking into the use of Unity for the new UI, I had always wanted to get into unity but never properly got my head into it, with the time and help provided I’ve managed to build my aptitude and develop an understanding of how the engine works, another great benefit of my time here.
I only have a week left here at Matmi but I’m certain it won’t be the last I see of the team. I’m going back to finish my MEng in Computer Engineering at the University of Birmingham, so there’s much more learning to be done! Hopefully everyone will manage without me, and I hope to keep in touch with Jeff and the team for more R&D on the foosball table and any other projects I can get my teeth into. I can without a doubt say that my time here was well spent, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, so a big thanks to everyone involved, and I’ll see you on the other side.
