Illustrator is a great part of the digital designer’s workflow, but some of the best shortcuts and time savers are a little hard to find! Here are some of the best we have come across recently.
Global Colour —
Super shortcut for recolouring artwork. Creating your artwork with global colour palettes saves your a ton of time if you need to quickly recolour artwork later on down the line. Double clicking the colour gives you the option to switch on ‘global’ — from this window you can also change the colour and it will change every instance of that colour on the file!
Template Layers —
This is a little hidden feature of the layers panel. Perfect for tracing rough sketches, click template locks the layer you are currently working on and drops the opacity to make it easier to work from. A lot faster than setting up your own locked, transparent layers.
Pixel Grid & Locking —
This a pretty recent addition to Illustrator and it frustrated many with it being well hidden in the UI. Turning on the pixel snapping of objects allows you to get pixel perfect vector art. Fixing those slight blurred edges where a line would land midway between pixels. Also turning on pixel grid will help when spotting small issues with blurred edges.
Draw Inside —
Designers with a background in Flash will be no stranger to this one. Draw inside will allow you to literally draw inside that object and it becomes clipping mask for any artwork drawn over it. Great for shadows, textures and extra details.
Create Guides —
Ever wanted more than the default horizontal & vertical guides? This is a mind blower. Just press cmd+5 with any artwork and you have yourself a guide!
If you have any good ones to add to the list, let us know in the comments!
