So you might have seen some news about Alton Towers opening up a new ride in May of this year called The Smiler; you may have also heard us mention (once or twice) The Smiler App we developed to promote the new ride. Well today, the The Sun newspaper printed quite a nice pull out (no, not THAT page) – it features news and information on the new ride and a ticket giveaway as part of an overall promotion for the campaign and the launch of The Smiler ride.
As great as this is, it’s not why I bring your attention to the Sun’s supplement; it’s to show off the augmented reality element of The Smiler App.
A mobile Rollercoaster
Take out your phone or tablet, load up The Smiler App (if you haven’t already, grab the app here), tap the scanner button and prepare to be amazed as the newspaper pages come to life! There are key images in the Alton Towers pull out that when scanned, show off some funky augmented reality (if I do say so myself). These are:
- The Alton Towers logo on the front page
- The large smiler face on the front page
- Double page spread starting on page 2
- The top corner of the rollercoaster image on the back page
Here are a couple of photos we took today:
To see the full effect you really need to check it out for yourself, so get the app and get scanning.
Keep an eye out in The Sun for more giveaways and information on the new ride
Play. Enjoy. Smile
